Gaviota’s Wind Caves

15 April 2012

On the high ridge above the ocean at Gaviota, the wind has carved caves into and through the rocks.  This is the hike made to those caves.  There are two methods to reach the caves.  You can go to the beach at Gaviota and hike  3/4 the way up the first ridge to the caves.  We did not do that.  We parked near a school a couple of miles inland.  We hiked up one ridge, down the valley, up the next ridge, and over the top, and then down to the caves.  Double click the first picture, scroll down and select next to proceed.  The comments under each picture provides the story of the hike.  Don’t forget to view the 5 videos mixed in with the photos.  Each video may take a bit to load...

I will emphatically point out that at no time were we lost.  At all times we knew exactly where we were.  We knew exactly where the caves were.  What we did lose was any kind of path or trail from where we were to the caves, so we made our own trail.  The trail we made was up and down deadly sheer vertical cliffs.  My friend chose the trail, and I followed.  I almost never complained, very much - hardly at all - only slightly..... maybe once....       :)
