Little Pine - 2

6 Feb. 2013

Little Pine may not sound very big or menacing.  It is basically in the mountains behind and north of Santa Barbara.  I have now hiked it twice.  We went up and back the steep trail on 13 Dec 2012, a total of 12 miles and 6 hr 40 min.  The elevation profile for this hike is absolutely brutal.  On 6 Feb 2013, we went up on the long 13-mile service road, and returned down the steep trail, a total of 19.31 miles and 8 hr 40 min.  The elevation profile for this hike is not as brutal, but it is 7 miles longer.

I have decided there is no easy way to the top.  The choice is a 13-mile hike with grades of 11 %, or a 6-mile hike with grades of 17 & 19 %.

The top of Little Pine mountain has several peaks.  We went to a different one on each hike.  Not sure which one is the “official” peak, but we have now been to both.
