Mt. Pinos

If you are not sure where Mt. Pinos is, join the club.  Its kinda like Tehachapi.  You know it is in California, but you aren’t sure where.  Well, Tehachapi is sort of east of Bakersfield, and Mt. Pinos is sort of south west of Bakersfield.  It is in the San Rafael Mountain Range. Chumash wilderness.

This hike starts at about 8,000 feet and ends up at Mt. Pinos at 8,830m feet.  That would seem flat enough, but there was nothing level about this hike.  It starts out going down to below 7,000 and then up and down between 7,000 and 8,000 until the final climb to 8,830.  My real problem was the altitude.  I live at around 200 feet altitude.  When I get over 5,000 feet I can feel the effects.  Hiking all day going basically between 7,000 and 9,000 was a killer.  The elevation profile said the steepest portions were 16%.  It felt a lot worse.
