This was my 3rd (and perhaps last) hike to the Big Sur Cone Peak area. Our intent was to choose a route that would have us staying at the top of Cone Peak for 1 night. We felt that isolated peak would be a great place to view stars. (The stars were indeed bright and beautiful, but the fact we were freexing to death in a 40 MPH wind dimed their luster a bit)
The last trip there, we hiked down the Stone Ridge Trail. Coming down that extremely steep trail I remember thinking, you would have to be crazy to hike “up” this trail. This time we hiked up that trail, and it was a bad as I thought. For this web page, I will break the hike up into the three days we were on the mountain.
