This was a relatively short 9 mile hike to the Davy Brown camp ground on Figueroa mountain. We went down one canyon and returned via a different canyon. The canyon down was long and steep; but the canyon back was short and very steep. Almost a mile on the return was at or near a 20% grade.
On this hike we tested out a couple of smart phone topographical map applications. These programs show trails on the topographical maps; and your current location on the map. The applications utilize maps that were previously downloaded, and use real-time GPS signals during the hike to determine accurate position. Cell phone coverage is therefore not required. The Davy Brown wildernesses has a variety on difference trails that intersect. These programs were very helpful in keeping us on our planned route. As per usual; during the toughest parts of the hike I was to busy trying to breath and take the next step to take any pictures :(
