The shortcut that wasn’t
We planned the out & back straight right line. Ended up a bit off course.
The official trail / road
We were headed to the ridge-line down to the ocean, all off limits
As in No Trespassing LOL
We could easily see the ridge, but we missed the trail up to it
We ended up going by a very old storage shed
We got back on an old jeep trail that looked pretty clear
It soon got very unclear
..and it remained that way for a long way
This trail was once a paved road, bits of ir remain
Finely, we can see our destination
MOVIE: Almost at the Point.
Pt. Sal is a rough beach
MOVIE: As close as I want to get
I did bring my backpacking chair
So I could relax and drink a toast to Pt. Sal
We passed Lion rock on the way back
Lots of Sea Lions..
..and lots of birds
The ridge-line home consist of several hills all leading up from sea level
The trail as seen from afar
MOVIE: 1st hill, with lots of sand
The 1st hill has lots of sand
Lots of deep soft sand, makes climbing difficult.
The next hill has firmer footing
The path to hill # 2
You overlook the official Pt. Sal beach
There is even a Geodetic survey marker out here
There is also a Geonetics system that tracks how fast California is moving into the Pacific
Another dip between hills
MOVIE: The dips between hills are getting steeper
Looking back to where we came from
..an almost flat spot
In the middle of nowhere, there is a pipe coming out of the ground (lower right bottom)
I have no idea what it connects to ???
Finally the last pull to Amber Peak
At the botton of this hill, a hard left and we follow the cow path home we missed on the way up
We went back on the bottom almost straight line
